Earth's Solid Surface
Earth's rocky outer layer is called the crust. Different features, or parts, make up the surface of the crust. These features are found on the continents. Continents are huge masses of land on the Earth's surface. Features found on the continents are often called landforms. Features of the crust are also found on the ocean floor.
Different features of the Earth's Landforms
1. Mountains are the tallest of the Earth's landforms. Their steep slopes rise to tall peaks.
2. Hills are smaller than mountains. They do not rise as high as mountains. But their rounded tops still stand above the land around them.

3. Mountain valleys are long, narrow areas of low land between mountains or hills. Deep valleys with steep sides are called canyons.
4. Plateaus are high landforms with mostly flat surfaces. Plateaus are often found along the tops of canyons. Mesas are like plateaus, but much smaller.
5. Plains are broad and flat. In the middle of the United States are wide plains.
